Apiru: The Wanderers
This body of work stems from a place of metaphoric wandering in my life. They are markers that reflect a journey. An attempt to locate myself, to find place, and to seek truth. The act of finding place can be both physical and transcendent; a space created to lose myself in order to find myself again. A place to engage and move through as an extension of my identity in relation to that which is outside of myself.
The forms and imagery in this work originate from Celtic Lore, Egyptian spirituality, Christian history, and the sacred architecture of ancient Mesoamerican and Etruscan Cultures. The work of painter Francis Bacon and sculptors Martin Puryear and Barbara Hepworth also play a strong role in form as well as content. The writings of Paul Tillich and Frederich Buechner have been guiding forces intellectually.
